Early Signs, Symptoms & Support
Did you know that in 2020, 1 in 64 four-year-old children in Arizona was identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ASD is a developmental difference that affects how the brain works. Every child grows at their own pace, but early screening and support can help children reach their full potential.
Recognizing the Early Signs of Autism
Signs of ASD may appear before age two and can impact how a child communicates, interacts, and plays. Some early signs by age include:
By 9 months: May not respond to their name or show facial expressions like happiness, sadness, or surprise.
By 12 months: May not use gestures like waving or clapping or play simple games like peek-a-boo.
By 15–18 months: May not share interests or point to things they like.
By 2–3 years: May not notice when others are hurt or upset and may not show interest in playing with other children.
By 4–5 years: May not engage in pretend play, singing, or dancing.

Early Screening Can Make a Difference
Finding ASD early can open doors to the right care and support, improving a child’s ability to learn, communicate, and thrive. If you have concerns about your child’s development, talk to their doctor about autism screening.
